Travelling to Vietnam

The different types of visas to Vietnam

Are you planning a trip to Vietnam in the nearby future? Then you’ve probably figured out that you need a visa to enter the country. This all depends where you’re from. If you’re from a country that’s on the visa exempt list, you can most likely stay in the country for up to 15 days visa free. However, if you want to stay for longer than that, you’ll have apply for a visa. If you’re not on the visa exempt list, you always have to have a valid visa before traveling to Vietnam. Let’s take a look at the three visa options:

Visa on Arrival

This is the most popular visa option because it’s easy to get, it’s fast, and affordable. Everything’s also done online so you only need to fill out an online application form, follow the instructions and voila! You’ll have a visa in no time. You can apply from wherever you are in the world! It’s arguably the best option. However, the visa on arrival is only valid if you travel by air. If you’re crossing the border for example, from Cambodia by bus, you must apply via the Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate.

E-Visa

Another online visa option, but the E-Visa is only available for certain countries and therefore it might not be good if you’re not on the list of countries who can apply for this sort of visa. But if you can, it’s just as good as the visa on arrival. It’s super easy to get as well. Do note that the e-visa is a 30 day, single-entry Visa, so you can’t get extend this type of visa if you wish to stay longer.

Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate

The third and last option is to go to the Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate and apply with them. If you want to travel to Vietnam by land, you must get a visa via the Embassy or Consulate. The reason why this option may not be the most convenient is because if you don’t live close to a Vietnamese Embassy, you must spend a lot of time on transportation and have to spend more money. So if you know that you’ll be flying to Vietnam, the most convenient option is to get a Visa on Arrival or an E-Visa, if you only intend to be in the country for maximum 30 days and you’ll only enter the country once.

That’s the three options you have for applying for a visa. It’s not more complicated than that! When you’ve gotten your visa, you’re all good to go and explore the beautiful, charming, and magical country of Vietnam. It’s one of the highlights in Southeast Asia.
